Protecting the Individual

I will set no worthless thing before my eyes;
I hate the work of those who fall away;
It shall not fasten its grip on me. Psalm 101:3 NASB

Direct your children onto the right path,
and when they are older, they will not leave it. Proverbs 22:6 NLT

Many options are available for individuals to protect themselves and their family from the evil dark side of the internet.

  • Use a software filter to screen information entering the home. A software filter will filter out undesirable Web sites or content.
  • Place the computer in a common area. This allows for accountability and for the parent to keep watch on their children’s activity.
  • Set time limits. The internet can be education and entertaining but it can also be destructive and a time waster.
Although these options can provide safe surfing, it is ultimately up to the user and/or the parent to guard what is viewed.

Net Nanny 5.6 will monitor and control individual activity on a computer including internet and IM. It includes user profile options and blocks unwanted sites regardless of which browser is used. Kids can request a site to be allowed or a password can be used to receive immediate access. Net Nanny can stop browsing, IM, or peer to peer file sharing. The controls do not allow for a third party access. Time limitations can be configured with the user not being able to change the computer clock to allow for additional time. Net Nanny offers remote access to make changes as needed and will supply email notification.

Safe Eyes 5.0 filters inappropriate sites. It offers a time scheduler, detailed log of IMs and chat rooms, account summary, and remote access. Again, the user cannot reset the computer clock to create additional usage time. Unlike Net Nanny, Safe Eyes will quickly inform when a user sends private information online or uses the internet in a non-approved manner. This can be done using text messaging, telephone, email or a combination of all. Protecting the identity of children is especially important to their safety. This software can be used on three computers but can be used on up to ten. Safe Eyes offers a user friendly chart to identify what controls are set for each user.

Kids Watch Internet & Parental Control offers many of the options as the two prior programs including time allocation, email reports, IMs recorded, and remote access. Rubenking disliked the remote access stating it was “too limited and buggy.” Kids Watch offers four age categories with preset configurations as an option as well as a “real time alert” when sites are attempting to access sites that are blocked or IMs that contact inappropriate wording. In addition to the preset configuration, this software provides sixty categories for blocking sites.

Covenant Eyes offers filtering and/or accountability services. With the accountability service, updates are sent to a designated accountability partner who will hold the individual accountable to what information is accessed over the internet. It offers an online Member Center, scoring report that easily identifies mature web content. The filtering service allows for individual settings for different accounts. It has a time scheduler. It contains the option to block unwanted sites or permit certain sites. It filters IM, email, and file sharing.

ControlKey is a device similar to a flash drive which allows children to use the computer. When the key is inserted into the USB drive, access is allowed to the internet. If the key is removed, “the computer operates in restricted mode based on guidelines you can customize.” The key also allows for restriction to specific files on the computer preventing accidental deletion or sensitive material being read.
